Carpathian Skies
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Act I is coming soon, in the meantime there's a demo you can check out!
What does it mean to be a person when every single part of you used to be someone else? What do you do when other people are tasked with deciding whether you should exist?
In Carpathian Skies you are a chimera - a mockery of science and possibly seen as an abomination. Every single facet of you was once someone else - not many of them went willingly into your creation. You're taken in by the crew of a sky ship known as The Carpathia, who have been hired to retrieve the eyes of a beloved member of the country's ruling council after their vicious murder and mutilation. . . Eyes that now belong to you.
Meet The Carpathia's Crew
Desdemona Krymmenos
"I understand what it's like to be something you don't want to be and have things done to your body that you wern't given a say in. I won't fault you for your anger but do not expect me to stand idly by if that anger endangers my family."
The Captain and owner of The Carpathia is fiercely protective over every member of her crew, and sees them more as family than those related to her by blood. She tends to be vocal about her values, including the need to be true to oneself and compassion. When something comes across as unjust, she speaks up. And when she speaks up, people listen.
Due to one of her parent's ill dealings with a malicious spirit and subsequential appearance, Desdemona spent much of her youth locked away from sight within the walls of the family's estate. She won't let herself or any other she cares about be hidden away again.
Esper Derecho
"Fallings not what you need to be worried about. It's how hard you're gonna hit whatever the hell it is you land on...trust me."
The Navigator and Bosun, Esper is quite easily the most standoffish member of The Carpathia and is a very outwardly aloof, and calculating individual. The First Mate prefers to stay on the edge of the group's conversations and gatherings. She doesn't see the need to filter her words or ideas for others.
Often, she comes off as cold and apathetic to those that don't know her well. Esper strives to meet her own standers no matter what, and is often baffled by others who fail to hold themselves to that same high standard. She can sometimes unfairly misjudge people who don’t match her in intensity – her judgment often stemming from an unwavering commitment to reliability and structure.
Zephyr Sirocco
"When I was a little boy one of my moms knelt in front of me in a park and she said, 'This way is left, and this way is right. Which do you want to go?' It's one of the only memories I have of her and I try to live my life with that question in mind."
Zephyr serves as the Second Mate and the Master of Sails for The Carpathia. He's a strong believer that life is sweetest when it’s shared with others. Supportive and outgoing, when he's in a crowded room, he's the one fluttering around making sure that everyone is having a good time.
Loyal to a fault, he tends to build lasting relationships with nearly everyone he speaks to, and can be counted on to show up whenever a hand or ear is needed. Knowing that there are folks out there who rely on him gives Zephyr's life a purpose. This isn't always a good thing as his deep desire to protect the ones he loves often leaves Zephyr acting as a shield rather than a blade.
Cirrus Venenum
"I'm not proud of everything I've done or what I was sculpted into being as a child...But, that's the thing about time, if you sit with it, it allows you to grow into someone better."
The doctor of The Carpathia can be mischievous, sarcastic, and unpredictable in his behavior and has been described by others as childish. Despite his seemingly carefree personality, Cirrus can easily become the most serious member of the crew when he decides a situation calls for it. He's normally seen being nonchalant and playful towards his friends and close colleagues However, he's unsympathetic and cruel towards anyone he considers a threat to himself or The Carpathia and her crew.
In tense moments, that string of aloofness leaves him, and he becomes someone else entirely. Cirrus is straight to the point and methodical when there is blood on his hands - whether that be from a patient of his current profession or a victim of his last.
Wynn Adustus
"I used to think I was invincible, that as long as I focused nothing would go wrong. But, if you're too focused on one tree, you forget you're in a forest and sometimes one of those other trees starts glowing when your back is turned and ends up blowing off half your face..."
Wynn is The Artificer of The Carpathia and is attentive, loyal, and generous. They always treat others the way they treat themselves, and will spontaneously do kind things for others just because they feel like it. Friendship means everything to them and if one of their friends has a problem, they'll drop everything and come help. This can be a challenge for them at times as Wynn is better skilled with machinery than they are with another's psyche.
They are ruled by the heart and their actions are natural and effortless because of their confidence and trust of their instincts. Wynn wants to be perceived as unbreakable because they're scared of admitting vulnerability, needing things from other people, or being incomplete.
Landon of The Mycellum
"I have been told by the others that it is... ironic I have tasked myself with the charge of the ship's food. My care for the garden is no different than a shepherd's care for their sheep. I and this leaf are just as alike as you and a lamb."
Landon, The Chef wants to understand everything in the universe, but one area in particular tends to mystify them: human nature. They feel most at home in the realm of logic and rationality. As a result, they can find themselves baffled by the illogical, irrational ways that feelings and emotions influence people’s behavior – including their own. This doesn’t mean that Landon is unfeeling, they want to offer emotional support to their friends and loved ones, but they don’t necessarily know how as the humans topside of Elsewhere are very different from their own.
As their people do not speak in traditional words, instead using hums and low whistles, common has been an interesting challenge for them to grasp which they rush towards enthusiastically. When not in the Carpathia's gardens or kitchen, they can be found in the library where the ship's captain teaches them to read.
A quick note!
Carpathian Skies is a one man band (two if you count my cat who is often sitting beside me while Carpathia is worked on) so the development time will be a little slower than most VN's. It's been a passion project and a wonderful bit of daydreaming for the last little while and I'm thrilled to be able to share it with others. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have making it!
